Steps to turn on the light in your new home

This post is also available in: French German Spanish

Once the process of buying, selling or renting your new home is over, you may find yourself faced with the situation that it does not have a power supply.

Below we indicate the necessary procedures to activate it as soon as possible, the cost of management and the aspects of contracting that you should consider.

With which supplier to turn on the electricity in my home?
Choosing one electricity company or another represents a completely personalized process for each user, what is good for one may not be the most beneficial for another.

This will be in charge of billing the consumption each month, therefore, making a comparison between the different rates available on the market will allow you to pay as little as possible. Take into account the following aspects:

The price per kilowatt hour (€/kWh) at which they will charge you for electricity consumption
The power term (€/kW) must be economical, especially if it is a second residence.
The possible economic penalties for temporary permanence in the contract, to be able to change if a better option appears in the future
The existence of additional maintenance services to the contract, and whether they are of interest or not
Marketer and distributor of light are not the same.
Before starting the electricity registration process, you must identify and distinguish the concept between electricity distributor and marketer.

As we have seen, the electricity marketer must be chosen by each user, since it will be in charge of billing at the price agreed in the supply contract. On the contrary, the distributor is the owner of the infrastructure that transports the light to the home and is assigned based on the geographical area.

What documents do I need to register for electricity and how much does it cost?
Data to turn on electricity in my home
To register the electricity, it is necessary to present the following data to the chosen company:

Data of the new light holder: name, surname, DNI/NIE/Passport, and contact
IBAN to direct the payment of bills, in many cases, must be in the same name as the electricity contract
Postal address of the home and CUPS for electricity, which you can find in the “Supply details” section of any previous invoice, or you will have to request it from the distributor in the area.
The power you wish to contract (kW), if it exceeds that allowed in the Electrical Bulletin, a new one must also be submitted.
How much will it cost me to activate the light at home?
The management cost will be paid on the first invoice and is divided into three rights regulated by the distributor:

Extension right, which has a price of €17.37 for each kilowatt of contracted power, plus VAT
Access right, which has a price of €19.70 for each kilowatt of contracted power, plus VAT
Down payment fee, which has a price of €9.04 plus VAT, but will only be paid if the supply has been off for more than 5 years or has never had electricity.
Steps to follow to register and deadline to have electricity
Once all the necessary documentation has been gathered, it will be time to go to the chosen marketing company to start the process.

The signing of the new supply contract can be done in person at the offices, however, it is recommended to do so by telephone for greater efficiency and speed.

Telephones to register electricity in the main companies

Iberdrola Telephone: 900 225 225
Endesa Telephone: 800 760 909
TotalEnergies Telephone: 900 907 000
